There is optimism, however, as he describes some pioneering habitat-rescuing schemes. Yet, as Attenborough says, Planet Earth III records not just nature’s majesty but how it has had to – and is continuing to – adapt because of the impact of just one species: humans. Nearly two decades after the original Planet Earth aired, we can marvel at just how much wildlife photography has advanced – filmed over nearly five years, this series’ film-makers have used pioneering technology including lightweight drones and remotely operated deep-sea submersibles – and, as ever, every frame captured by the BBC’s Natural History Unit is a vivid image.
